What Are They Talking About On TikTok?
You're not too old for TikTok, you just haven't dug into it yet.
You’ve probably found TikTok cause you’re bored in the house, bored in the house, BORED, and are wondering if you should start to tie-dying. Don’t worry if you don’t get that yet, I got you.
PS- I can’t embed TikToks here SO thx for bearing with me.

Let’s start with the basics.
EGIRL
The egirl — or eboy — trend popped up as a counter-culture to the homogenous look of Instagram influencers all using the same presets. Think a Tumblr aesthetic with bright hair, sharp winged eyeliner, and bold outfits. The egirls have range and are constantly evolving their lewks, from modern scene queens to Doja Cat there’s no one way to egirl. Currently, egirls are doing a chunky highlight look.
🥺👉👈
This emoji combo means shy/nervous/bashful/timid. It’s also straight-up adorable. You’ve seen it in comments and in cute little dances. If it had a sound, it would be *meep*.
VSCO Girl
This is an oldie but still relevant to the TikTok ecosystem. VSCO girls are an egirls low maintenance sister. A VSCO girl probably has some combo of Chacos, a Hydroflasks, no-makeup-makeup, and a Fjällräven's Kånken backpack.
A Simp
A guy who does something nice for a girl in the hopes that she’ll date him and then he gets disappointed when she won’t date him. Basically, it started as a gen-z nice guy bitching about the friendzone.
Soft Girl
A soft girl is a deliberately cutesy and feminine style. Patterned dresses, plaid skirts, oversized sweatshirts. Basically, dressing like Ariana Grande or Rachel Green.
Hype Houses
TikTok creators are all about working together. They’re constantly recreating one another’s videos. So Hype Houses are basically creator hubs where everyone can get together and collab. The most popular ones are:
@TheHypeHouse: The collective that started it all and helped shoot already popular creators like Charli D’amelio, Addison Rae, and LilHuddy into superstardom.
#TheBossHouse: Twitch and Allison Holker’s collective where TikTok dancers come to their home and dance together
#FentyBeautyHouse: Rihanna & Co invited beauty influencers and creators to come play around with the product and make videos around that.
Alright so how can I get in on this?
TikToks curation algorithm is continually refreshing to serve up new content. Meaning, followers don’t carry the same weight here as on other platforms. So you can still go viral with only 10 followers.
My best advice is to just find your vibe and run with it. I’m currently into watching people comment on wild moments from old TV shows. I don’t think this many people have talked about Camp Rock or Glee since 2008.
